Honda Brio Overview

The Honda is certainly one of the most popular Japanese automaker in the country, which boasts several popular and successful models in its stable. The compact hatchback segment being the most popular segment in the country, all the automakers try to capture a fare share of the segment. Honda being one of the major players in India’s automobile market couldn’t ignore the segment. The company launched the Brio compact hatchback few years ago, which became immensely popular due to its stylish compact design, practicality and peppy performance.

Now the Japanese automaker is working on an all new Brio, which would be launched sometime in 2018. The new Brio will surely come featuring an updated design at the exterior and inside the cabin as well. As the Honda Amaze and the Brio shares the same platform, it can be said, that the new Brio would come featuring the similar fascia, which the newly launched facelift Amaze sports. View offers on Honda Cars from Honda dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop.

Honda Brio Style

Well, it is the same body shell that has been carried over and hence the Brio looks the same. Except for the fascia, though. The Brio gets a brand new bumper which it now shares with the new Amaze. The sculpted bumper with its three part air dam looks sporty and adds a touch of muscle. The BR-V-like thick horizontal slat radiator grille gets black treatment with a chrome lining.

The profile, again, is exactly the same but now the Brio gets turn indicators on the retractable wing mirrors and a new alloy design (only for the top-spec car). The glass tailgate continues and now gets a big spoiler and reworked rear bumper. And yes, the tailgate glass is quite strong and does not shatter unless hit.

Honda Brio Space

Maximum changes are on the inside as you can notice the Honda Brio facelift gets a new dashboard, which is lifted straight from the Amaze facelift. However, the compact sedan gets a beige lower-half while the Brio gets all-black dashboard, which looks youthful. The range topping VX trim comes with all-black upholstery while the lower trims are offered with beige interiors. The steering remains the same but the instrument cluster is new featuring blue illuminated rings and new MID display. The centre console now offers a well integrated audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, audio quality is quite good for a car belonging to this segment. There is no auto climate control on offer but the digital AC controls which look like auto AC but are actually manual, is a neat touch.

There is a Max Cool function for the AC which actually puts the fan to max and lowest temperature setting, which is a good feature to have when it’s super hot and you just want the AC on full blast when you get inside the cabin. You also get power foldable and adjustable ORVMs with blinkers on the VX trim. The driver’s seat gets height adjustment along with steering wheel adjustment. The seats are comfortable and well spaced out, rear legroom is decent but three passengers at the back would be a tight fit. Boot space at 175-litres is average considering the bigger capacities of hatchbacks in this segment.

Honda Brio Engine

The engine and transmission would remain same. In that case, the 2018 Honda Brio will be powered by a 1.2 litre four cylinder SOHC engine under the hood which will be paired with a 5 speed manual gearbox. Expect a CVT to come on offer as well. The same engine under the hood of outgoing Honda Brio churns out 87 bhp of peak power at 6000 rpm and 109 Nm of peak torque at 4500 rpm. In the outgoing model the engine delivers a fuel efficiency of 12 kmpl in city and 17 kmpl on highways. Expect the next generation Brio’s engine to get a tweak to deliver improved fuel economy; the CVT version will deliver the similar fuel economy however. For more info on Honda Brio visit

The Brio continues to offer 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmission options unlike the Amaze facelift which gets a CVT now instead of the torque converter. The manual gearbox feels slick and tactile to use and along with the light clutch, many of you won’t complain about driving it in traffic. The 5-speed auto gearbox feels much better than the CVT and is a breeze to drive in traffic conditions. Yes, there is a slight lag while upshifting when you floor the throttle but it offers smooth shifts with part throttle. However, the Brio auto returns a claimed 16.5 km/l fuel efficiency which is lower than the manual’s 18.5 km/l claimed mileage.

Honda Brio Driving

The Brio is set up on the softer side like all Honda cars and the ride is comfortable but on the jiggly side. It soaks up road bumps quite well, even at speeds but the soft setup does reflect in cornering dynamics where the body roll comes in. The anti-roll bar across the struts in the front does well to damp it down. In terms of dynamics, the steering, being an electric unit, has less feedback but is direct and precise making it easy to manoeuvre in tight traffic. It does weigh up a little at high speeds to provide firmness and stability. The disc brakes up front and the drums in the back work well and the braking has the right bite and progressive feel to it.

Honda Brio Safety

The Honda Brio facelift is available with ABS and dual front airbags but only on the range topping VX variant. Honda should have offered the safety features at least as an option for lower variants considering the rising awareness of these features in India. Nonetheless, Honda’s badge is very well known for its after sales and reliability. They are offering a standard 2 year/40,000 km warranty with the new Brio.

Honda Brio Bottomline

The 2018 Honda Brio will surely come more stylish ore aggressively design. The upmarket features inside the cabin and the safety features will surely enhance the appeal of the hatchback. The Honda Brio has always been a fun to drive car which offers good interior space and performance. It lacked when it came to features while a very plain-jane dashboard robbed the cabin of appeal. However, with this update Honda has given the Brio a new lease of life and has improved the whole package drastically. The Amaze derived dashboard not only looks fresh but has additional features to go with it. Amongst the cosmetic changes, we love the all black upholstery in the top variant. Though the mechanicals remain unchanged, the Honda Brio has become a much improved and appealing hatchback.
